On Tuesday 4/28/20 at approximately 1:28am a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was on routine patrol when he passed the Exxon store at 4310 North Main in Liberty.
He observed a white in color van parked by the gas pumps with both doors open. The deputy pulled in the parking lot and attempted to block the van so that he could check the suspicious vehicle.
The driver started driving off and the deputy but was not successful it stopping the van. The deputy activated his emergency lights. The van took off at a high rate of speed. A pursuit took place going south on Main Street.
The van slowed down in front of the Buddy’s furniture store. The deputy observed the driver jump out of the vehicle and run away. While the van was still rolling the passenger moved to the driver’s side of the vehicle and continued to attempt to evade the deputy.
The driver of the van disregarded several stop signs and drove through the Wal-Mart parking lot.
The van came to a stop and the driver took off running away. The LCSO deputy was able to apprehend the person that was attempting to escape. The driver was identified as Yexis A. Benavides Estrada, W/M, DOB: 08/13/1994. When the deputy inventoried the van he found tools and a card reader that appeared to have come from a gas pump at the Exxon store.
Investigation showed that there were three card readers missing from the pumps at that location. It was determined that the defendant intentionally fled from the marked patrol unit and that he had the intent to harm or defraud another by having possession of a digital imprint device.
The defendant was CHARGED WITH 1. Evading Arrest/Detention with a vehicle – Second degree Felony 2. Fraud use/Possession of Identifying information – State Jail Felony
He was transported to the Liberty County Jail without incident. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the identity of the person that escaped.
