DOUBLE FATALITY ACCIDENT, LEGGETT, TEXAS

At approximately 10:50 am on Friday February 28, 2020, an 18 wheeler hauling lumber, driven by Jody Jenkins, 44, of Brooklyn, Texas, was south-bound on US-59 in Leggett.  Jenkins' rig suddenly slammed into a red Mercedes Benz E-350, driven by Brenda Kirkling, 60, of Houston.  Kirkling pulled out of the parking lot of the Chevron in Leggett but failed to yield.  The impact caused Jenkins' rig to slide as lumber began to spill all over the roadway.  Both vehicles slid and finally came to rest around 100 yards from the point of initial contact.  Kirkling's vehicle came to rest on the side of Jenkins' rig.  Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Heavy Rescue Unit, Officer McDuffie from the Corrigan Police Department, Sergeant Jason Paske with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Troopers with the Texas Highway Patrol including Corporal Ramey Bass, Alan Stanton, Kevin Burman, Ashlee White., and Sergeant Sam Lattner.   Sadly, Kirkling and her passenger, Linda Autry, 58, of Missouri City, Texas were both killed on impact.  Jenkins is was physically okay.  Justice of the Peace, Jamie Richardson performed an inquest at the scene.  A first call car from Pace Funeral Home transported Kirkling and Autry from the scene.  Traffic on 59 in Leggett was blocked during investigation and cleanup. Clifton Chevrolet out of Corrigan was summoned to clean up the mess.  This accident remains under investigation from the Texas Highway Patrol.
