DPS Traffic stop leads to 2-arrests in Liberty County

On 11/03/2020 at approximately 2020 hours a Texas State Trooper made a traffic stop on a gray in color 1996 Ford passenger vehicle. A deputy with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit arrived on scene to assist the Trooper as the secondary unit. The deputy was advised that the driver was a registered gang member. The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Eric Joseph Cortez, W/M, DOB: 10/27/1983 and Sandra Lynn Clem, W/F, DOB: 01/25/1963. Cortez advised the deputy that he was a member of the criminal street gang called “Tango Blast”.

Consent to search the vehicle and both occupants was given to the LCSO deputy. A plastic baggie containing suspected synthetic cannabis was found in the front right pocket of Cortez. A search of the vehicle was made and a larger quantity of the suspected synthetic cannabis in a Crown Royal bag was found in the glove department. Inside the bag were also several empty plastic bags. Due to the amount of suspected narcotics and packaging material it was determined that the narcotics were not just for personal use but were being packaged for resale. Both individuals were arrested and charged with Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance – First Degree Felony. They were both transported to the Liberty County Jail without incident.
