The airport opened in 1969 with terminals A & B (in the distance). The 565 room hotel -- currently operated by Marriott -- located in the middle of the photo opened in 1972.
The name was changed to George Bush Intercontinental Airport/ Houston on May 2, 1997 after George H. W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States.
