Man Rescues Baby from Burning Car in Goodrich

At approximately 6:35 pm on May 15, 2020, a white 2014 Kia sedan, driven by Portia Drew, 28, of Nacogdoches, was north-bound on US-59. As Drew passed under the 1988 overpass, she heard a loud noise come from the car's engine compartment. The engine compartment was suddenly engulfed in flames. Drew and her passenger, Olorunjenmose Akinlad-Ajose, 22, of Nacogdoches, both bailed from the car leaving Drew's one year old baby boy in the back. The car left the pavement to the right, rolled down an embankment and turned upside down in a creek. Drew and Akinlad-Ajose ran to the car to try and save the baby. To make matters worse, the car had caught fire. A witness to the accident, Carl Bruton, jumped out of his vehicle and grabbed a claw hammer. Bruton ran down to the burning car, broke open the window with his hammer and pulled the baby to safety. Troopers Colton McQuilkin and Chris Cain with the Texas Highway Patrol were dispatched to investigate. Drew and her two passengers were all three transported by ambulance to CHI Livingston Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Volunteer Firemen from Goodrich and Livingston put the fire out. Drew's vehicle was recovered by Fawbush Wrecker and will be stored in Goodrich.
