At approximately 2:25 pm on Tue. October 8, 2019, a red 2019 Chevy Silverado pickup, driven by Stevenson McClendon, 63, of Houston, was south-bound on US-59 a short distance south of the Neches River Bridge. McClendon's pickup veered right, impacted the end of a guardrail, and proceeded down an embankment where the pickup turned over and came to rest upside down. By all accounts, McClendon was dead on the scene. Preliminarily, it is believed that McClendon possibly had a massive heart attack. During the wreck, 15 bails of marijuana spilled from his pickup. Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with Trooper Chris Cain and other Troopers of Polk and Angelina Counties, and Narcotics Investigators from the Polk County Sheriff's Department. Justice of the Peace, Jaime Jones performed an inquest at the scene. A first-call car from Corrigan Funearal Home transported McClendon from the scene. McClendon's vehicle was recovered by Riley Wrecker Service out of Corrigan. This whole incident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol in conjunction with Narcotics Investigators from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
