On June 25, 2020 the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit received information that a subject identified as William Earl Tanton, W/M, DOB:09/15/1985 had an outstanding warrant out of Humble Police Department for Robbery. A check on Tanton’s information revealed that he was also wanted by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for Felony Evading Arrest/Detention in a Motor Vehicle and had a warrant for Assault causing Bodily Injury in Liberty County. The LCSO deputies were able to locate Tanton at a residence in Hull, Texas. Surveillance on the residence was done. Tanton was observed leaving the residence driving a black Ford Escape. The deputies initiated a traffic stop at the Hull Drive-in Convenience Store on FM-770 near FM-834.
The vehicle stopped and Tanton immediately exited the vehicle on the driver’s side and fled from the deputies on foot. He ran in to a wooded area. The deputies pursued Tanton and observed him jump in a private pond and attempt to swim away. The deputies surrounded the pond and attempted to talk to Tanton to get him to come out of the pond. Tanton then began to shout at the deputies telling them that he would drown himself before he would go back to jail. After the negotiations failed three (3) deputies entered the pond in an attempt to take Tanton in custody. He attempted to evade the deputies so a CLE (pepper ball) was used. The deputies were then able to take Tanton into custody. EMS arrived on location to treat Tanton. Tanton was then taken to the Liberty County Jail on the above charges and an additional charge of Evading Arrest/Detention (Class B Misdemeanor) was filed. All agencies confirmed their warrants. (Information is taken from the deputy’s report. The defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty.)
On July 1, 2020 at approximately 11:40am Liberty County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to CR-1821 in reference to a possible Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon call. On the way to the scene a deputy observed a vehicle matching the description of defendant. A traffic stop was initiated. The vehicle did not come to an immediate stop. The deputy followed the vehicle as it made a turn on another roadway. When the vehicle finally stopped the deputy confirmed from dispatch that it was, in fact, the vehicle from the assault location. A felony stop was conducted. The deputies had the driver exit the vehicle. He was identified as Ricky Eugene Ross, B/M, DOB: 07/11/1960.
A LCSO investigator was called. Several eye witnesses were at the scene. Spent shell casings were recovered and will be used as evidence. Photos and statements were taken. The investigator “bagged” the hands of Ross for a GSR (gunshot residue) test. Ross was place in custody and filed on for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon a Second Degree Felony. He received the Miranda Rights and waived them. He was transported to the Liberty County Jail without incident. (Information is taken from the deputy’s report. The defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty.)
On July 6, 2020 at approximately 3:26am a deputy that was leaving an extra job observed a vehicle driving about 5 mph in the wrong lane near Ames, Texas on Hwy 90. The deputy notified LCSO dispatch and deputies arrived to assist. A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle did not stop. The pursuit went through Ames and into Liberty. The driver made the patrol sergeant take evasive action when he drove in the east bound lane and he was travelling west. The driver swerved back to the west bound lane and struck the curb causing two tires to blow out and the rims to bend. The vehicle proceeded to a vacant lot east of Bowie Street and came to a stop.
The driver failed to obey commands to exit the vehicle. K-9 Jack was deployed and a Taser was used to gain compliance. The driver was identified as Alex William Morris, B/M, DOB: 11/23/1980. He had a clear bottle in his hand that contained PCP. The PCP weighed approximately 17.5 grams. He was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest/Detention with a Motor Vehicle (Felony 3) and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Felony 2). He was transported to the Liberty County Jail without incident. (Information is taken from the deputy’s report. The defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty.)
